The Week That Was

Manitoba started the week with a rematch against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday afternoon. The Moose started off their only afternoon regular season home game with a goal scored by a player making his debut. Forward Jordan Schroeder, the 1st round draft pick of the Canucks in 2009, deflected a Lawrence Nycholat shot past Daniel Larsson to give Manitoba a 1-0 lead just 1:52 into the first. Almost five minutes later, forward Kevin Clark–also making his debut with the Moose–put home a rebound to put the Moose ahead 2-0. The score stayed that way until just past the midway mark of the third period, when Nycholat fired home a slapshot to make the score 3-0 Manitoba. Schroeder added his second of the afternoon in the final minute of regulation, one-timing a Matt Pettinger pass to give Manitoba the win. Cory Schneider stopped all 38 shots he faced to pick up his four shutout of the season. The win, Schneider’s 29th, also set the record for most wins by a Moose goaltender, beating his own record of 28 set last season.

The Week That Was

For the first time in nearly three weeks, the Manitoba Moose went into a game on a high, having won their first game in seven. The team didn’t get much time to celebrate that, as they played against the team they beat on Saturday night, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, on Sunday afternoon. Manitoba did get off to a good start in this game, with Matt Pettinger scoring just over a minute in to make the score 1-0. Ben Lovejoy tied the game up at one before the initial frame ended, then Tim Wallace and Luca Caputi scored goals one period apart to give the Pens a 3-1 win. The Moose finished their latest road trip at 1-5, and ended the month of January with a 4-8-1-0 record. Only two of Manitoba’s four wins in January came in regulation.

Moose forward Marty Murray opened the scoring off a juicy rebound just under two minutes into Friday’s game to give his team a quick 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the midway mark of the first, when Ryan Hamilton deflected a Tyler Bozak pass to tie the game up at one. From then on it was all Moose, as Marco Rosa went top-shelf on Joey MacDonald a minute into the second to put Manitoba ahead 2-1. Darryl Bootland picked up his first goal of the season off a Marco Rosa pass to give the Moose a 3-1 lead, then proceeded to duke it out with Jonas Frogren in a unique form of celebration. With under three minutes to go, Sergei Shirokov broke his five-game goalless drought by converting on a Travis Ramsey pass to make it 4-1 Manitoba. Neil Petruic capped off the scoring with his first of the year midway through the final frame to give Manitoba its first win six games, and first regulation win since October 16th. The five goals were the most scored this season by the Moose (they also scored five against Abbotsford in a 5-4 shootout win on October 14th), and it was the first time the team had scored more than two goals in a game in 13 games.

The Manitoba Moose and Norfolk Admirals faced off for the first time ever, just over eight years after the Moose entered the AHL from the now-defunct International Hockey League (IHL). The Ads made their presence felt early into their first visit to the MTS Centre, as former Brandon Wheat King Ryan Craig scored off a rebound just 1:29 in to give his team a 1-0 lead. Just past the halfway mark of the first, Matt McCue one-timed Tommy Maxwell’s pass from behind the net to even up the game at one. For those keeping track, this was the first goal and points scored by the fourth line this season, a period of 15 games. The score stayed even until the early stages of the third, when Brandon Bochenski converted on the power play to put the Admirals up for good. Paul Szczechura added an empty-netter late in the game to give Norfolk a 3-1 win over Manitoba.
