Burrows Accuses Referee Stephane Auger of Being ‘Out to Get Him’

**Jan 12th – Updating the latest on the story as I hear it**

Jan12th – 7:20 PM: Burrows has received a $2500 fine, but no suspension.

Jan 12th – 6:42 PM: Burrows hearing with Colin Campbell underway.

With 5 minutes left in the Nashville game, the Canucks were on a powerplay with the game tied 2-2. Seconds into the powerplay, Alex Burrows is called on a very odd interference penalty that takes the Canucks off the powerplay. Seconds after that, the Canucks get called again. Nashville  scores on the ensuing 4-on-3 powerplay and goes on to win the game.

I was mad after the game, because when the outcome changes because of weak calls, it’s always a poor way to end the game. However, having refereed sports before, I know how difficult it can be to make the right call most of the time,  so I tend to often give the refs the benefit of the doubt. So, while I was mad, I wasn’t completely outraged.

That changed after hearing what Burrows had to say after the game.

Alex Burrows accused referee Stephane Auger of a personal vendetta to get even with him after a missed dive earlier in the season.

It started in warm-up,” Burrows said. “Before the anthem, the ref came over and said I made him look bad in Nashville on the Smithson hit and he was going to get me back tonight.

After my second penalty I skated by him and he said ‘If you say a word I am going to kick you out.’

Full quote and video can be found at The Vancouver Province.

If this is true, and I definitely believe Burrows in this case,  because Auger has a history of awful calls (and because I’m a bleeding heart biased Canucks fan), this can’t be good for the NHL. Corruption in officiating needs to be dealt with swiftly. However, at the same time, the NHL seems to often side with the officials in these situations, and Burrows might be facing suspension.

Either way, it’ll be fascinating to see where this story goes in the next couple of days.

Burrows’ emotional post-game comments:

The Plot Thickens: January 12th – Looks like other referees are equally dismayed with what happens. I was fully expecting the refs to stand in solidarity with Auger, but it looks like at least one is speaking out against him.

You file it away in the back of your cranium,” he said. “But you wait until you get a game where the score is 5-1, and then you might call him for something. You say, ‘We’ll meet up again one day.’ But you don’t hurt the team.

Things are looking worse and worse for everyone involved. TSN’s Bob McKenzie has an excellent post on what might be happening with this situation as we move forward.

Alex Burrows rocked the NHL and risked fines (likely) and suspension (possibly) Monday with strong words contending a referee was out to get him and told him so before the game.

Burrows was called for three penalties in the game. Two were costly. They were at best questionable, at worst non-existent. One, a phantom interference call 15:15 into the third, took the Canucks off a power play during a 2-2 game. It essentially cost Vancouver the game as Henrik Sedin subsequently took another penalty handing Nashville a 4-on-3 power play on which it scored.

“It was personal,” charged Burrows, shaking in a post-game scrum while talking to media.

Burrows fingered referee Stephane Auger and said he approached him before the game. Auger brought up a hit in Nashville on Dec. 8, according to Burrows, when Jerred Smithson got a game misconduct for charging Burrows. On the play, Burrows stayed down for an extended period of time but didn’t miss as shift. The suggestion is that Auger thought, in retrospect, Burrows dived and told the Canucks forward that before Monday’s game.

Video from the Sportsnet broadcast of the pre-game warmup shows Auger speaking with Burrows:

“It started in warm-up,” Burrows said. “Before the anthem, the ref came over and said I made him look bad in Nashville on the Smithson hit and he was going to get me back tonight.

  1. After watching that game there is no way what Burrows says can’t be true. Referee Stephane Auger, should be kicked out of the NHL not Burrows. Now every time this ref is on the ice in Vancouver he will not be able to work people will toss stuff at him and boo him at every turn….go figure a bad ref in a game full of them. Also I feel “someone” should post all the emails for the big wigs at the NHL so we can let them know how we feel about it!

  2. The post-game interview with Burrows is probably the most emotional/animated I’ve ever seen him act off the ice. Certainly makes you feel like there’s some element of truth to what he was saying.

It’s not often that I even comment about how a game was refereed, but watching the highlights of last night’s game between Vancouver and Nashville on Sportscentre last night, Burrows certainly has a case about how goofy the officiating was. Between the Henrik Sedin hooking call in the first and Burrows’ interference call late in the game, I don’t know which one was worse. I can’t really speak about most of the other calls or non-calls in the game, since I listened to the game through an internet feed (Team 1040).

I’m not saying that Burrows isn’t 100% innocent all the time. He’s been an agitating player that has done some questionable things dating back to his time in the minors, and when you build up such a reputation (such as, say…a Sean Avery or Todd Bertuzzi), fairly or unfairly, you’re likely not going to get the benefit of a doubt on borderline calls. In saying that, Burrows has a valid case here. It probably won’t help with how he’s treated by the refs in the future, though.

Sadly, I fully expect Burrows to get fined for his comments. It’s rare that a player, coach, or management type makes such strong comments and gets away with it. I doubt he’ll get suspended, though.

As for Auger…I doubt he’ll get fired. I can’t really think of a case in recent history where an on-ice official was punished to such an extent for making bad calls or non-calls. There’s a chance they might sit him out for a bit, but I doubt it’ll be permanent.

I think Bob McKenzie has a pretty good writeup about what’s likely to happen with this case. It’s going to get pretty ugly, no matter what decisions come down from this episode.

  3. So Umm Dickhead… Obviously

  4. I have read somewhere that e-cigarettes are the best altenative for smoking and will even help you quit this really bad habit. Now me and my husband we are desperate for a solution on stopping smoking and we have relatives that got cancer from smoking and I really can’t tell you the horror behind those scenes when someone you care for knows their days are set up in a countdown.
Not sure if this is the best place to ask for this kind of advice but would really love some help from you — especially regarding the electronic cigarettes – like if you have used them how much did they helped you stop or did you even bought them for quitting or just as a replacement for real cigars. Reading though the web I have heard so many different oppinions and just can’t find a thruthfull review reagrding this matter.
Anyway, regardless of the e-cigs, I need any other quick solution that can help me and my husband get over this addiction.
    Thank you all.
